First time on track

Is your car ready?

Most standard cars already are. Tick these off and you will sail through scrutineering. Your ticks are saved on this device.

You're good to go.
Pick an event, buy your licence, and say hello at sign-in. Let us know it's your first time and we can put an experienced driver in with you.

Day or annual licence?

You need an AASA licence. A day licence covers one event; an annual General Speed licence covers 12 months. Pop in today's prices from AASA and we'll do the maths.

Enter both prices to compare.

How the day runs

  1. Gates open

Get there early. Grab a carport or pit bay, first in, best dressed.

  2. Empty the car

Spare wheel, mats, tools, the glovebox. Pop the bonnet, helmet on the seat.

  3. Sign in & scrut

Show your AASA licence, sign the indemnity, collect your timing transponder. Scrutineers come to you.

  4. Drivers briefing

Compulsory. Miss it and you don't drive. Questions welcome.

  5. First session

Not a hot lap. Learn the direction, the corners and your braking points.

  6. Chase your PB

You versus the clock. Talk to the people next to you; they were new once too.

Times are typical; each event's supplementary regulations confirm the exact schedule.

Heritage check

Nugget or friend?

From 2014 to 2024 the series ran strict Nugget Nationals rules. They are retired now and every car is welcome, but it is still fun to know. Is yours a true nugget?

The story

Same nuggets.
Now with friends.

Run by long-time track enthusiasts who have been driving and organising track events for the better part of two decades.

2014

Four cars and a dare

Nugget Nationals starts as a side series for cheap, low-powered cars. The first event has four entrants.

2018+

Full fields

Rounds rotate through Winton, Broadford and Haunted Hills, with the odd dyno day and METEC thrown in.

2025

The gate opens

Mission achieved: new people on track. The Nugget rules retire and the series becomes Nuggets and Friends.

2026

Five rounds

A full season across three circuits, AASA licensed, open to any car and any driver who isn't a d*ckhead.

"The lap times have been incredible but the lifelong friendships have been even better."The organisers

No
d*ckheads.
Ever.

  • Everyone running the day is a volunteer. Treat them like it.
  • Aggression or bad attitude towards anyone gets you banned from all events. Permanently.
  • Drive courteously outside the gate. We want the locals to like us.
  • No pets. Kids supervised at all times, no bikes or scooters in the pits.

Not driving?

Come and watch. It's free.

Spectators never pay. Bring a chair, a hat and sunscreen, and someone to explain why the Barina is faster than the Commodore.

Haunted Hills

Multiple viewing platforms make Bryant Park the most spectator friendly round. No food on site, so pack lunch.

Broadford

88km from Melbourne, big elevation changes and an onsite canteen from 7:30am to 2pm.

Winton

The longest drive but the longest track, with a canteen open 7:30am to 2pm. Where it all began.

Merch

Wear the nugget.

Long sleeves count as track-legal clothing if they're cotton. Just saying.

Questions

The stuff you're too shy to ask.

What licence do I need?
An Australian Auto-Sport Alliance (AASA) licence. Buy a day licence for a single event or an annual General Speed licence if you will do a few. Motorsport Australia licences are no longer accepted.
Can I bring any car?
Yes. Since 2025 every car is welcome as long as it is track-worthy: no leaks, tread on the tyres, life in the brakes. A standard, unmodified car is a great way to start.
What helmet is OK?
Anything meeting at least Australian Standard 1698, European ECE R22 or a higher auto racing standard. Road bike helmets pass but are not ideal in a car; Motorsport Australia Schedule D explains the upgrades.
How do I mount the fire extinguisher?
In a metal bracket, securely bolted to the car, within easy reach. Using the passenger seat bolts with a bit of sheet metal is common. Cable ties, tape, 3D printed brackets and self-tapping screws will not pass.
What do I wear?
Non-flammable clothing: long sleeve cotton top to the wrists, long pants to the ankles and closed shoes. Race suits and shoes are optional.
Is it a race?
No. It is you against the clock. Everyone gets a timing transponder and official lap times, included in the entry price. No door-to-door racing for position.
I have never been on a track. Is that OK?
More than OK, it is the whole point. Tell us at sign-in and we can put an experienced driver in the car for your first session to show you the lines.
Do I have to move my car for scrutineering?
No. Scrutineers come to your parking spot. Empty the car, pop the bonnet and boot, and leave your helmet on the driver seat.
What if I miss the drivers briefing?
You will not be allowed on track. Listen for the PA, or for someone shouting really loudly.
Can my family come?
Yes, spectators are free. No pets, and children must be supervised and not ride bikes or scooters.
How much does an event cost?
Entry fees are listed on each event page. Spectators are always free.

Bring
a mate.

The friends part matters. Send the next event to someone who has been threatening to "do a track day one day" for years.
